NRL: National Rugby League… in America?

Image“Rugby? Yeah, it’s like American Football, without the pads”

That is often the description rugby fans offer Americans when it comes to describing the game. Less rules, more action, less pads, more fitness.

Truth is that Americans may soon be making up their own opinion on the game as the NFL and Premier Rugby Limited (which represent the English Aviva Premiership clubs) have partnered up with a plan to bring a professional league to the States.

Both Forbes and The Guardian have reported than beyond the August 10th exhibition between London Irish and the US Barbarians, the bodies involved foresee a rugby league in America, specifically the east coast, as early as 2014.

Will Americans take to rugby? Will rugby take to Americans? Will players like Brian O’Driscoll or Jonny Wilkinson use the American League(s) like David Beckham and Thierry Henry have in the MLS, as a swan song for some sun and cash?

So long as there is cheerleaders, oversized beers and big screens, does anyone really care? Interesting to see how it works out.
